Over 100 physicians have used their participation in an approved NICQ or iNICQ Collaborative for Maintenance of Certification Part 4 credit following criteria established by the American Board of Pediatrics:

  1. Participate in the approved NICQ or iNICQ collaborative for 12 months minimum.
  2. Attend a minimum of 4 meetings of the improvement team either locally or at national meetings.
  3. Perform the improvement project during the period of time approved by the ABP for the specific NICQ or iNICQ project in which the physician participated.
  4. There are two pathways that physicians may use in submitting their work from approved NICQ or iNICQ Collaboratives for Part 4 MOC credit:
    • Submit an improvement project at the design phase. The physician must submit the description of the proposed improvement project using the Portfolio New Project Notification Template. The process for projects submitted at the design phase is shown in the flowchart.
    • Submit an improvement project after it is completed. The physician must submit the description of the completed improvement project using the Portfolio New Project Notification Template. The process for projects submitted after completion is shown in the flowchart.
  5. If a physician submits an improvement project at the design phase it will be reviewed by Vermont Oxford using the Scorecard. A score of 35 points or higher will be required to qualify for credit. The physician will then submit an improvement story describing the work to NICQpedia when the project is completed. The diplomate's name will not be submitted to the American Board of Pediatrics until the project is complete (See 7 below). We recommend that you use the MOC Submission Checklist to address all the points that will be scored.
  6. Prior to submitting your improvement project please review the ABP scoring template to be sure that the submitted project includes the required elements and will achieve the necessary score.

  7. If a physician submits an improvement project after completion it will be reviewed by Vermont Oxford using the Scorecard. A score of 38 points or higher will be required to qualify for credit. The physician must submit an improvement story describing the work to NICQpedia when the project is completed (See 7 below). We recommend that you use the MOC Submission Checklist to address all the points that will be scored.
  8. Prior to submitting your improvement project please review the ABP scoring template to be sure that the submitted project includes the required elements and will achieve the necessary score.

  9. For all projects, including those submitted at the design phase and those submitted after completion, the physician must, after completion, post an improvement story describing the improvement on the NICQpedia website using the NICQpedia template proposed by the ABP. Please note that improvement stories submitted for ABP Part 4 credit must follow this template which includes elements not in the routine NICQpedia instructions for improvement stories.
  10. For projects submitted at the design phase, the improvement story posted to NICQpedia will be evaluated to determine that the project has been completed as designed. It is the responsiblity of the Local Leader to determine if the project is complete. The improvement story submitted to NICQpedia will not be rescored.
  11. For projects submitted after completion, the improvement story posted to NICQpedia will be scored using the Scorecard. The improvement story submitted to NICQpedia will be reviewed by Vermont Oxford using the scoring template. It must receive a score of 38 points or higher to qualify for Part 4 MOC credit.

In addition to the above criteria, the following steps must also be completed:

  12. Identify a local leader for the improvement story and have this local leader sign and submit the ABP local leader acknowledgement form to Pam Ford at the Vermont Oxford Network.
  13. Follow these instructions for submitting an ABP attestation form. To verify meaningful participation in the collaborative submit this form to Pam Ford at the Vermont Oxford Network. This form must be signed by the diplomate applying for credit and must be co-signed by the local leader. A sample attestation form is available here
  14. Submit the checklist of completion along with the URL of the improvement story on NICQpedia to Pam Ford at the Vermont Oxford Network. The checklist, attestation form, and local leader acknowledgement should be sent to Pam Ford, Vermont Oxford Network, 33 Kilburn Street, Burlington, VT 05401 or emailed to: pam@vtoxford.org or faxed to 802-865-9613.
  15. If after review the Vermont Oxford Network determines that your improvement story meets the above criteria, the diplomate will be informed and VON will submit the diplomate's name, ABP ID number, name of the project and completion date to the ABP as eligible for MOC credit. If the improvement story does not meet the criteria, the diplomate will be notified and given the chance to revise the improvement story.
  16. The ABP will review the improvement stories on NICQpedia that are submitted for MOC credit and review the scores assigned by the VON review committee. If the ABP agrees with the VON review committee, participation in the work reported in the improvement story would count for MOC Part 4 credit.
  17. If the ABP disagrees with the VON review committee, the team submitting the improvement story will be given the opportunity to make changes to the improvement story to comply with the ABP standards and to have the revised improvement story re-reviewed. The decision of the ABP will be final.
